‘Cotton-blossom’ on the verge of extinction: Scientists

A species of cotton-blooming plant has been found in a remote corner of Australia and it is the first time scientists have discovered a new species in the country’s southern desert.

Scientists have named the species Cylosiptera bairdii, after the cotton-flowers native to Australia.

The newly-named plant was discovered by an undergraduate student at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), who has since published his findings on the internet.

Dr Andrew Johnson, from the Department of Botany, said the plant is the latest to be discovered in the desert area.

“It was found in an area we call the ‘Celestia Desert’ which is a long-established, well-studied, high-value desert in the south of New England.

It’s an area that has been largely ignored by scientists and conservationists,” Dr Johnson said.

“[The plant] has an unusual plant structure which means it can produce some very specialised, beautiful flowers and it’s also very difficult to see.

They have this beautiful red-orange bloom which is just phenomenal.”

The plant has a long, thin, green leaf and it produces red flowers called “cotton blossom” that are usually yellow, brown and white.

Cotton blushes are an important part of the plant’s diet and are also found in other desert plants.

There are a number of other species of cress, but they are not related to cotton.

Professor Johnson said the new species was a species of “snow cress”.

“The cress is not a snow cress.

It’s a really different plant.

Its a little bit more compact, has very short stalks, it has a bit of a shorter leaf, a slightly smaller plant, but the plant itself is very, very different,” he said.”

It’s a very different species of snow cressing, with very different growth habits.”

Dr Johnson said it was likely the plant had survived for hundreds of years due to the high temperatures and humidity in the area.

“The temperature’s high enough that the plant has developed an internal insulation, but when it’s wet, it’s a bit hard to see,” he explained.

“So if it gets dry, it can’t grow very well and so it will just die, so you’ve got to be very careful.

If it does survive, that’s really a pretty big accomplishment.”

Scientists hope to identify more species of new species of plants in the future.

This is the third discovery of a new plant species in Australia in the last year.

In April, Dr Johnson and his colleagues discovered a unique plant in northern Queensland.

He said the plants were both very different from each other and that the plants had similar habitats.

Another discovery of new plant life came in August, when two Australian researchers found a new, isolated, desert plant in a region in northern Victoria.

A small sandstone deposit had been discovered on the ground in the Kimberley.

Researchers are now trying to determine if the desert plant was part of a larger ecosystem that had been destroyed by a nearby mining project.
